The IRL is an important estuary adjacent to HBOI which is frequent study area in many of this lab's studies. Liberta has always worked hard studying the Indian River Lagoon. She worked at HBOI from 1973-1982. She also played prominent roles important  in other education and conservation institutes, acting as first the first curator at Manatee Observation Center in Fort Pierce and the first manager of the Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserve.
